making sense of climate change

HSBC

Future leaders

HSBC saw the need for a strategy to deal with the long-term consequences and opportunities arising from climate change. CarbonSense was asked to work with the Group’s future leaders to raise understanding and explore both the risks and business potential inherent in the climate challenges ahead.

As part of the HSBC Group’s global graduate development programme, CarbonSense delivered regular half-day workshops. These introduced graduates and future leaders from around the world to wide-ranging national and international perspectives on the issues surrounding climate change. Each workshop explored the responses of governments and the UN, HSBC, competitors and other companies. They also involved examining potential areas of future vulnerability and highly creative sessions to assess the scope for climate changed-related opportunities in each of the Group’s main business divisions.

Questions answered included: What does a global bank look like in a carbon constrained world? Can a bank really make a difference to our global effort to tackle climate change? Can a bank still be profitable in a low carbon future? Are there new financial products and services that are needed for a low carbon future? What will they be?
